A Prayer for the Injured and Homeless in Haiti

Disaster in Haiti.
The devastating 7.0 earthquake has caused thousands of deaths and widespread destruction. The number of casualties is currently estimated at 50,000 but is expected to be higher. On a forward-looking note, the United States government, mainly through USAID, is leading a massive aid operation, sending food, water, medical supplies, and search-and-rescue equipment to the ravaged island. Many other countries have sent teams too. Israel has sent a relief package that includes a field hospital and a rescue unit (see video of the Israeli team here).

Believers can add a special prayer for the health and welfare of the the tens of thousands of injured and homeless people. In Jewish tradition, it is customary to recite a public prayer for the sick during the Shabbat morning prayers in synagogue. This prayer, usually said following the reading of the weekly Torah portion, is known in Hebrew as mi she'berach la'holim. Here is the traditional prayer, with slight adaptations to the current terrible tragedy, that I have brought to my synagogue this Shabbat:

PRAYER FOR HEALTH AND WELFARE OF HAITI EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS

He who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Moses and Aaron, David and Solomon - may He bless and heal the sick and injured in Haiti because we will contribute to charity on their behalf. In reward for this, may the Holy One, Blessed is He, be filled with compassion for them to restore their health, to heal them, to strengthen them, to revivify them, and provide them with food, water, medicine and shelter. And may He send them speedily a complete recovery from heaven for their two hundred forty-eight organs and three hundred sixty-five blood vessels, among the other sick people of the world, a recovery of the body and a recovery of the spirit, swiftly and soon. Now let us all say: Amen.
